Last night’s episode started off with yet another group sing, this time offering their take on the Beatle’s “With a Little Help from My Friends.” And from what we’ve seen of the way these groups regard one another and interact backstage, they have truly forged friendships during this experience.
Once again, the groups were to perform twice, with an elimination ceremony in between performances. Still in the running were Committed, the Backbeats, and Street Corner Symphony, as well as ACR clients Jerry Lawson & Talk of The Town and On the Rocks.
First, the groups were to perform what have surely become big favorites in the a cappella world – medleys (just a reminder to all groups out there – be careful who you mash up, because you never know how much trouble getting the rights to distribute recordings of those mash-ups can be). The groups worked together hits by Sir Elton John, Usher, the Beatles, Lady Gaga and Otis Redding. Then in the second half of the show, the groups performed songs selected by the judges, leading to stellar renditions of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and The Animal’s “House of the Rising Sun,” among other great performances.
Sadly, in the first elimination round of the night, On the Rocks were sent home, drawing not just a small amount of ire from the a cappella community on Twitter and Facebook. Their high-octane, tongue-in-cheek performances offered some of the most entertaining moments in the show overall. If you miss them already, their catalog of studio albums – all of which are available through us – reflect a tradition of that same commitment to entertainment. You can even purchase their takes on “Bad Romance” and Mr. Mister’s “Kyrie” (both of which you’ve seen this season on the show) to have in your a cappella library.
But when it came time for the second elimination, the judges found themselves unable to send home any of the four remaining groups. And so the amazing a cappella acts proceeding to the finals will be Committed, Street Corner Symphony, the Backbeats, and our own Jerry Lawson & Talk of The Town!
