Peter Hollens has just released a fourth single – a cover of Justin Bieber’s “Pray” – which is the latest in the series of pop covers (“Born This Way” by Lady Gaga, “Firework” by Katy Perry and “What’s My Name/Only Girl” by Rihanna) from this young and promising artist.
Just like his other singles, “Pray” offers listeners a polished, professional, and exciting musical performance, executed entirely a cappella. But Hollens hopes that this one will be especially successful. That is because the proceeds from “Pray” will be donated to the Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan, and he wants to do as much as possible to help the cause.
“I just want to make a difference,” he explained. “I feel like as an artist…it makes perfect sense to donate my gifts to help get exposure for charities and organizations doing amazing work.”
Hollens employed the help of fellow featured Sing-Off cast members Courtney Jensen (on vocal percussion) and Therry Thomas (as a featured soloist) to add something special to this track. He also put together a small gospel ensemble comprised of arranger Tom Anderson and Sing-Off competitor Hannah Juliano, University of Oregon alumni who sang with On The Rocks (an ACR client which he founded) and Divisi, as well as several local gospel choir singers to flesh out the sound.
“The dedication and talent really came together, [thanks to] all my most talented friends,” Hollens said. “Now we just need social networking to do [its] job, to push it out there, and hopefully good things will happen.”
He also hopes for the opportunity to use his gifts toward helping other causes as he continues to make more singles.
“I’m going to be doing a lot more charity work going forward,” Hollens said. “I’ve contacted a non-profit that is doing work in Haiti still trying to rebuild after the devastation that hit them last year, and a brain cancer organization.”
